“Glorious!” Auditions set for Sept. 7

Glorious! By Peter Quilter
Full Length Play, Comedy
Time Period – 1940s / WWII
Settings Of Play – New York City, 1944

Hilarious comedy of the worst singer in the world In 1940’s New York, the performer who everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect. Known as ‘the first lady of the sliding scale’, she warbled and screeched her way through the evening to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics, instead she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was.

Based upon a true story, the play spins from Florence’s charity recitals and extravagant balls, through to her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall in this hilarious and heart-warming comedy.

The Cast of “Just Desserts” is Announced!

The Allegan Community Players are pleased to announce the cast for our murder mystery show “Just Desserts”!

Judge Reginald P. Cogsworth, a curmudgeon who hates sweets, is judging a charity bake off, albeit grudgingly.  Countless entries have been whittled down to three:

  • A Raspberry tart from Scooter Bright, owner of a nail salon
  • Depression-era Cake recipe baked by Edna Mae Carter, the local librarian and self-proclaimed crazy cat lady
  • A Rich Chocolate Torte created by Margaret Mason, a local high society lady.

In the middle of the tasting, sour old Judge Cogsworth drops dead, and it’s up to Mrs. Peabody, head of the contest, and the audience to determine the cause. There are clues in the theatre to help.  The audience also gets to question the three contestants, all of whom have had some unpleasant dealings with the judge in the past.

Directed by Rachel Bywater, the show features returning ACP regulars Onnie Kiraly as Scooter Bright and Virginia Oppenhuizen, playing Margaret Mason.  We welcome three newcomers to ACP, all of whom have stage experiences with other area theatres.  Richard Moll, from Otsego, will be playing the Judge; Jane Holewa, from Allegan, is Ms. Peabody; and Marie Lallinger-Smith, also from Allegan, will be the crazy cat lady Edna Mae Carter.

Join us for dessert and to help solve the murder on Sunday, February 19th at 3:00 p.m. or Monday, February 20th at 7:00 p.m.  The shows will be held at the Four Roses Cafe in Plainwell. Seating is limited. Cost for the show and dessert is $20. Reserve your seats now by calling Linda Havens at (269) 873-8084 or email allegancommunityplayers@gmail.com.

*There is a $10 admission charge for holders of membership and sponsorship tickets.*

Improv Workshop

On January 15th, we will be hosting an afternoon Improv Workshop at the Griswold from 2 p.m to 5 p.m.  This workshop will be led by Scott Fuce.  He has a theatre degree from WMU; has studied extensively at Second City in Chicago; coaches Forensics; and is a M.I.F.A. certified judge and coach. Scott teaches Improv (and other classes) at the Grand Rapids Civic Theater, and was a founding member of The Madd Hatters.

Improv is theater that is made up completely on the spot: no scripts, no lines, and no teleprompters. But it’s not just “winging it.” Improv is being totally present in the moment.

Join us for an afternoon of fun – jumping in and saying “YES…and” is half the battle. Cost for the workshop is $10 for ACP members and $20 for non-members.  (Note: the $20 fee will include an individual membership good through August 31, 2017.)

Auditions for “Just Desserts”

Auditions are January 4th & 5th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Carnegie Room at the Allegan District Library. ACP member, Rachel Bywater, is directing, with assistance from past president, Marne Sieber.

The Four Roses Cafe in Plainwell will be hosting the show on Sunday, February 19th and Monday, February 20th.
